"Ghost Ship" was one of those 'iffy' horror movies, you never really know if the trailers do it justice or not. In this case and in my opinion, Ghost Ship was a fun and impressive horror flick. This film has one of the best and most shocking opening sequences I've ever seen. From that moment on, I was hooked. After the initial shocker, we are taken to present day to a salvage crew hauling in their latest fortune. While celebrating their find, and themselves, the crew (Gabriel Byrne "Murphy", Julianna Margulies "Epps", Ron Eldard "Dodge", Isaiah Washington "Greer", Alex Dimitriades "Santos", Karl Urban "Munder") are approached by a stranger who shows them an aerial photo of a ship which he says disappeared and appeared several times while doing fly-by's. At first the crew is reluctant after just getting off a six month stretch at sea. But, ultimately greed takes over and they decide the payoff may be worth it. In a much better story than its predecessors, "13 Ghosts" and "The House on Haunted Hill", Ghost Ship had some great 'jump out of your seat' scares. It is kind of a cross between "The Shining" and maybe "Alien" (in the fact that 'Epps' (Margulies) plays the tough as nails hero.) The crew sets out to find the "Antonia Graza", an Italian luxury liner that disappeared nearly 30 years ago. They don't know yet that this is the particular ship until they "suddenly" find it though. Murphy (Byrne) knows the ship well, and tells his crew the story of the Graza. Once they actually board the ship, they all begin to experience some very strange occurrences. (enter the similarities to "The Shining")Very soon after boarding the liner, they discover hundreds of millions of dollars worth of gold. They make the decision to leave the ship and take the gold. You guessed it - bad move. It seems this ship has other things in mind for this crew and it won't be as easy as they think to get the gold to their salvage boat and just leave. The film spends minimal time on characterizations, we do however know enough about the crew to understand their different personalities and quirks. As with most horror movies, characterization isn't really needed too much, considering most aren't around for long. The only problem I had with Ghost Ship was the unveiling of the truth at the end told in flashbacks. There are plenty of clues along the way, and you can get the main background, but then they had to throw in the "step-by-step" guidebook anyway. It did explain much more, but I personally like to find the clues myself and figure things out. Even with the clues provided, you are able to "figure it out", but the flashback sequence provided by the young ghost "Katie" (Emily Browning), who has befriended Epps, basically just takes us through the whole night of events that led to the deaths of the Antonia Graza's passengers and crew. Even still, I found Ghost Ship a very well made, engrossing and entertaining story. The cast was great as well, offering up some very unique personalities portrayed by very talented actors. The Zone rates Ghost Ship a 6 out of 10 for its interesting plot, great set designs and imaginative cinematography. All in all, well worth the watch!
